| #2: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IA2: BEACON LIGHT IN A MISTY NIGHT Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Music by Master Fa-Chung Monk Miao-Kung, The emanation of Da Zi Zai Wang Fo and the founder of the Buddhayana Order, Sat sadly down by railings with tears streaming down His cheeks, wetting His clothes, Looked around, found that the pure Dharma was forever decaying. All four corners of the Samsara were filled with wavering believers and non-believers of Buddha Dharma. How sad was the situation! All lineages of Buddha's teachings had been casted by the shadows of darkness. The Monk felt even sadder because awakened beings were hard to come by. Trapped in the deluded and obscured Samsara, the road to the Purelands nowhere clear. (1) Work hard to save the fortunate children of Buddhas. Vow to liberate and emancipate all the suffering beings and to lead them to Sukhavati. Sail the great Dharma Ship and transmit the profound teachings, such as The Eight Levels of Mind Development and the Nine Levels of Physiological Cultivations, to Unify the body and mind and to perfect the integration of essence and accomplishing activities. The precious teachings of Mahayana Zengong are so profound that they are beyond description and expression. (2) Human beings are very unsettled during this degenerate time. In the storm waves of the ocean of desire, the influence of Mara on human beings appears to be more than that of Buddha. Pseudo-Buddhism seems to attract more attention than pure Buddhism. No progressive teaching for the realization of the true nature of the mind and No teaching on how to spontaneously attain Buddhahood are given, yet All their activities and concerns mainly are to seek offerings from their followers. All their practices are only aiming for rebirth in the Heaven Realms. (3) Listen, my realized, enlightened fortunate children! Quickly engage in transmitting the teachings and propagating Mahayana Zengong with devotion and dedication. Let the great Dharma Ship sail against the gusty winds, and through the giant waves of the ocean. Actualize the practice of patience, tolerance, and diligence and abide by the state of Oneness. Swiftly attain enlightenment and liberate all sentient beings. Complete the perfection of the primordial wisdom and Buddha activities. Together we shall all ascend to the Purelands of Ultimate Bliss. We shall all live at ease, carefree, and constantly abide by the Pureland of Calm and Illumination. #3: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IA3: PERFECT ATTAINMENT OF THE LOTUS PURELAND Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Music by Master Fa-Chung My home is in the Pureland of Calm and Illumination where The Thousand Ornaments Palace is found. There are innumerable Buddhas. The ground of the Palace is fully covered by glistening sands of gold. There are hundreds of song birds giving off subtle, wonderful sounds. The Buddhas are constantly accompanying by Bodhisattvas and retinues. Colorful rainbows shine all over the ponds of lotus flowers. Since the arising of the conceptual ignorance I have passed through the Heaven of Clear Light, and By further delusion I have eventually arrived at the Samsara. Away from the Buddhafield I have forever separated from Buddhas and Have suffered from all unimaginable hardships. My heart has always been filled with memories of Buddhas. It is a long journey to actualize the state of birthlessness [undying], and It requires constant practices of diligence and Bodhichitta. Life in Samsara is really suffering. It is like a bird flying away from its sweet, safe nest and trying to survive in gusty winds and stormy rains. Lord, My Buddha! When can I see my true nature of the mind? When can I actualize the perfect qualities with glorious adornments? Since the arising of the conceptual ignorance I have passed through the Heaven of Clear Light, and By further delusion I have eventually arrived at the Samsara. Away from the Buddhafield I have forever separated from Buddhas and Have suffered from all unimaginable hardships. Dharma friends! The Buddha has manifested Itself in the Samsara. Dharma friends! We all should diligently practice in order to see our true nature of mind. Quickly take up meditation practices so that The grasping aspects of the sense faculties and sense objects can be effectively cut off. Don't forget the Pureland of Calm and Illumination. Return, however difficult it may be, to primordial awareness and Buddha activities. Perfectly attain full enlightenment and ascend to the Lotus Pureland. Perfectly attain full enlightenment and ascend to the Lotus Pureland. #4: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IA4: THE ZEN STANZA OF NAN-SHAN Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Music by Master Fa-Chung Spiritual practice and meditation are equally available for everyone. But They require faith, confidence, devotion, dedication. Raise high the Mahayana banners and play loud the Dharma drums. We shall take the journey to attend the Seven-Day Zen Retreat (Chan-Chi). Bravely march forward, Even if there are thousands of tests and hurdles to be overcome. Eradicate the fundamental ignorance. We shall actualize that Bhutatathata essence, the true nature of the mind. The aching and the back pain are signs of eradicating karma and defilements. The meditation and dynamic exercises are practices for purifying the body and mind. The discourses, blessings, and empowerment are keys to spontaneity and unlock the omniscient wisdom. We should fervently, diligently practice meditation. Thus We shall attain realization in the prescribed time and ascertain boundless luminosity and radiance. #5: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IA5: THE BOUNDLESS HEART Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Anxiously waiting and waiting, but Where are the heart-felt Buddhayana disciples? How many times have I called out? But, Who would answer the call? The return of the boundless loving compassion is merely the boundless disappointment! Whom can the Masters depend on? All are busy with worldly concerns, affairs, and activities. When will you awake, my disciples? When can you be free from the illusion of the sense faculties and sense objects? The true nature of the mind is primordial, intrinsic, self-pure. Comprehend, understand that our innate Buddha nature is of primordial self-fulfillment. Please, listen to my plea, my disciples! Pledge your vow to liberate suffering and bring joy to the boundless sentient beings. Please, listen to my plea, my heart-felt disciples. Come and understand my Boundless Heart! Anxiously waiting and waiting, but Where is my vividly clear, purely awakened mind? How many times have I seen the awakened mind in my Dream? But, Did I ever awaken? The return of the endless hard labors is merely the boundless disappointment! Fortunate to have met the Masters! Awaken me from the unending dreams. When will I see my Bhutatathata essence (true nature of the mind) face to face? When can I realize and actualize the illusory nature of body and mind? The true nature of my mind is intrinsic, self-pure. Fully understand that my innate Buddha nature is of primordial self-fulfillment. Yes, listen to my plea, my honorable Masters! I sincerely vow to liberate suffering and bring joy to the boundless sentient beings. Yes, listen to my plea, my heart-felt honorable Masters! Come and understand my Boundless Heart! #6: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IA6: THE SONATA OF NAN-SHAN Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo The whole thousandfold world is crooked and dangerous. Agricultural land was once an immense ocean. Time never waits but keeps flowing. The young and pretty grow into old age much faster than one can realize. The good old days pass by like the dancing breeze. It slips away just like that! Turn around and look, and one will find that Some tens of years have gone by. To wander in the Samsara is to live in an endless cycle of sufferings. How many beings know the true nature of their minds? A hundred year's praise and blame, fame and notoriety will soon be gone just like the blink of an eye, so Never try to cling to them. Still vividly remember that Heaven of Clear Light! In there The illusions arise out of conceptual ignorance. When will we realize the true nature of our minds so that We can meet again in the Pureland of Calm and Illumination! Hurry up! Come and learn the Great Illumination Treasures. Such precious, supreme teachings are extremely rare to come by in Samsara. It is difficult to liberate oneself from the cyclic Samsara, Clinging to worldly concerns and activities and grasping, attaching to kinships and companions. Come quickly to the Dharma Ship and Sail together toward the Thousand Ornaments Palace. The Mahayana Order has provided the most precious teachings in the Nan-Shan Temple. It is the Unimaginable-High-Avatamsaka-Sutra That is taught in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat (Chan-Chi). The love and compassion of Ben Shi can be felt throughout the teachings, transmission, empowerment, and discourses. When one faces the Bhutatathata essence, the true nature of the mind, One will experience the primordial purity and luminosity which pervade the Dharmadhatu. #7: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IB1: PRAISE TO GRAND MASTERS Lyric Poem by Master Fa-Ben Music by Master Fa-Chung The Buddhayana teaching is supreme, ultimate, and marvelous. It is the most precious teaching in the universe. It is unanimously and pleasingly approved by all Buddhas. It deserves praise, offering, refuge, and homage from all sentient beings. The Dharma is beyond expression and can best be comprehended by transcendent wisdom. It is like the treasure hidden in the dark that simply cannot be seen without light. The precious, venerable Grand Masters to us are like the Sun to the whole world because They have widely expounded the Buddhayana teachings for our sake, liberating all sentient beings from sufferings. Good fortune allows us to meet the Grand Masters Shan-Fo and Shan-Yin this lifetime. Both of them are dedicated to widely transmitting and propagating the teachings. They have shown us the path leading to enlightenment and have engaged in the liberation and emancipation of sentient beings from sufferings. They have been turning the wonderful Wheel of Dharma with loving compassion, giving the nectar of wisdom to all beings. Our appreciation of the Grand Masters is immeasurable For they lead us out of delusions. They have freed us from the darkness accumulated for a thousand years and have warmed our hearts. We are all in debt to the venerable Grand Masters and we are grateful to them. It is like thinking about the head of the river when one drinks water. We should vow to repay the debt. #8: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IB2: THE DHARMA SHIP OF MAHAYANA Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo The lineage of the Mahayana Order is long and far reaching. The ocean of sufferings has been transmuted into Sukhavati, the Lotus Pureland. Saintly Monk Miao-Kung was the founder of this Order, followed by Master Yeun-Dao. Grand Masters Shan-Fo and Shan-Yin have widely transmitted and propagated the teachings. The Buddhayana teaching is supreme, profound, and beyond description. The progressive paths and teachings offered allow one to attain enlightenment in this lifetime. This supreme teaching includes both the understanding of the true nature of all things and the accomplishment of all Buddha activities Which will certainly lead sentient beings to realization of the true nature of all phenomena and appearances. Da Zi Zai Wang Fo guides the compassionate Ship. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas take care of the sails. Da Zi Zai Wang Fo then manifests as the Monk, Miao-Kung, Who revealed the Dharma treasures to this Jambudvipa, in the south of the Universe. The teaching includes those of the eight major schools of the Mahayana Vehicle. Miao-Kung was an ultimate, perfect Dharma-King. He tried to turn around the evil influences in this degenerate time. He transmitted Pure Dharma to liberate all Buddha-children. The spirits of disciples of the Mahayana Order are high. They all dedicate and devote their energies to liberate beings of the Six Realms of Existence with love and compassion. We will always remember to strive for attaining self-realization and to engage in the liberation of others. All of us will actualize the state of birthlessness, beyond birth and death, and all live in the Pureland of Calm and Illumination. It is beyond birth and death! It is the Pureland of Calm and Illumination. #9: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IB3: AN EASY SINGLE-TRIP JOURNEY Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo How long is the life span of a human being? Time is flying and keeps flowing. It is the worldly concerns, activities, and affairs that trapped us here. People come and go through this Samsara hundreds of times; Who, the young and beautiful and the hero, are able to get free from the worldly traps? See the unceasing Samsara! See the unending passions, the blind love! Don't blindfold your eyes. Learn the profound Buddhayana teachings. Realize that the true nature of sin is intrinsically empty. Understand that the true nature of the body is like a water bubble and the movement of the mind is like wind. Vow to comprehend that the mind is self-existent since beginningless time. Vow to attain the state of birthlessness, the state of undying. Swiftly actualize enlightenment, Bhutatathata essence. Wholeheartedly engage in the liberation and emancipation of all sentient beings. Make it an easy single-trip journey through this Samsara! #10: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IB4: THE EMPTY NATURE OF THE BODY AND MIND Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo The true nature of sin is inherently empty. The karma, virtue, and fortune are like a mirage. If there is an arising, then there will be cessation. Good meritorious conduct is also like a mirage. The true nature of the body is like clustered water bubbles and the movement of the mind is like wind. See the body as non-inherent existence and Realize the discursive mind as a mirage. The true nature of mind is beyond death and birth. The body and mind are intangible as the body is composed of the Four Elements. The nature of the mind is never born. Our mind arises because of the existence of circumstances and conditions. All phenomena are the self-display of the mind. A wise person fully realizes and apprehends the empty nature of the body and mind. Is there any difference between such a wise person and Buddha? Now, luckily, arises the opportunity to join the Mahayana Zengong. Diligently practice and strive to attain full enlightenment. #11: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IB5: THE PRACTITIONER Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo From different places we all gather here for the Seven-Day Zen Retreat (Chan-Chi). This fortunate, auspicious opportunity does not happen simply by chance. It can be traced back to the relationships of many lifetimes. The relationship is difficult to cut out. It becomes more complex when we try to untangle it. Maintain a continuous contemplation and pray that we shall realize the Bhutatathata essence. Actualizing the unity of mind and Buddha nature we shall embrace the essence of Dharmadhatu. The true nature of mind is never separate from us and is beyond coming and going. The Bhutatathata essence is inseparable from the Dharmadhatu. The mind is as vast as the boundless expanse of sky and earth. It has never been stained nor pure. It is neither hidden nor apparent, neither two nor one. Truly comprehend the Principle of Dependent Origination, We shall know that human life is nothing more than the existence of illusory flowers. There won't be ignorance and delusion once We realize the true nature of emptiness through the Wisdom Eye. Let us make the supreme vow without any hesitation, and, Let us wholeheartedly work side by side to engage in the liberation of all sentient beings and all attain full enlightenment. Let us make the supreme vow. Let us wholeheartedly work side by side to engage in the liberation of all sentient beings and all attain full enlightenment. #12: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IB6: THE LAUGHTER IN NAN-SHAN Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo A loud laughter is resounding in Nan-Shan. Because The True Self has been found! How many millions of waterways and thousands of mountain ranges does one know? Time keeps flying and human beings easily grow old. Take the auspicious opportunity of the Seven-Day Zen Retreat (Chan-Chi) to contemplate the nature of the mind. Sail the Dharma Ship of Buddhayana. Liberate all sentient beings from the fetters of traps. Rely on the practice of the marvelous teaching to attain full enlightenment in this lifetime. Realize that all phenomena and appearances depend on circumstances and conditions. The true self is beyond birth and death and there is no need to search outside of us. A loud laughter is resounding in Nan-Shan because The True Self has been found! The mind is like the boundless expanse of sky which encompasses everything. Sail the Dharma Ship of Buddhayana. Liberate all sentient beings from the fetters of traps. Rely on the practice of the marvelous teaching to attain full enlightenment in this lifetime. #13: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIA1: REGAIN THE TRUE SELF Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo How long has the endless cycle of rebirth lasted? Have you forgotten that time has never been of any concern to the true self! There are always worries, troubles, and sorrows in our daily life. The sun rises, the sun sets, time keeps flying, no matter what! Spring after spring, how many springs have passed by? Everything is over when one faces the Lord of Impermanence. What we are busily pursuing in our daily life is nothing but acquiring more sorrow and suffering. We may travel up to the mountain top or down to the ocean bottom, but Life is like rivers which always, inevitably, flow eastward. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Sometimes you rise to the top and sometimes you fall to the bottom, but You will never escape the cycle of birth, old age, sickness, and death. Although the Bhutatathata essence, the Buddha nature, is intrinsic self-presence, I am reborn in the Samsara. Who is capable of seeing through the deluded, secular world? The world is like a kaleidoscope, a million changes happen in one instant. It is not wise to indulge in the Samsara. Let us make the supreme Bodhichitta vow, and Let us stride to attain full enlightenment and regain the true nature of ourselves. * Composed by Grand Master Shan-Fo during the Spring Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, 1995. #14: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIA2: TRANSCENDING REALITIES IN NIRVANA Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Look! I determine to apprehend and actualize the true nature of the Bhutatathata essence. Look! I determine to gain liberation from the endless cycle of rebirth. It will never last long for things that depend on circumstances and conditions. The teaching of Mahayana Order is supreme and is beyond expression. It is indeed beyond description and expression. Existence is emptiness; emptiness and existence are inseparable. It will be free from happiness and sorrow after transmuting consciousness into primordial wisdom; then I shall be able to freely come and go in the Ten Directions and the Three Realms. Actualize the true reality and attain full liberation. Comprehend the Principle of Interdependence. Realize the empty nature of all things. Ascertain the inseparability of mind and Buddha. The true nature of the mind is beyond birth and death. All marvelous phenomena and appearances are displays of the true emptiness. The true meaning of the Four Transcending Realities of Nirvana, which are the state of eternity, bliss, true self, and purity, is Buddha. The true meaning of the Four Transcending Realities of Nirvana is Buddha. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 1995. #15: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIA3: CONSTANTLY TURNING THE WHEEL OF THE DHARMA Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo The Seven-Day Zen Retreat (Chan-Chi) of the Mahayana Order takes place in the Nan-Shan Temple. It is a joy that everything is supreme and noble. The brilliant golden light shines in all directions. The wonderful Dharma sounds can be heard everywhere. Unifying with Buddhas and Bodhisattvas as Oneness, The Bhutatathata essence is spontaneously present in the very moment. Attaining the inseparability of the mind and Buddha, the nature of Clarity, purity, luminosity, and radiance pervade the whole Dharmadhatu. Seeing the true nature of the mind and Realizing the Bhutatathata essence, We all ascend to the state of sainthood. Nothing is more noble than constantly turning the Wheel of the Dharma. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 1995. #16: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIA4: TIME FOR THE FRUITION OF ENLIGHTENMENT Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Immeasurable kalpas passed by. Feel sadness and sorrow just thinking about that. Endless cycles of rebirth keep flowing. Patiently wait for attaining enlightenment in this unending Samsara. Now, having high hopes of Practicing the teaching of the Lineage of Buddhayana Order, and Fully realizing the scary consequences of impermanence, I can no long wait for any instant. I have been lost and I have wandered around in the Samsara. The compassionate Masters show me the road leading to enlightenment. I shall hurry to contemplate and apprehend the true nature of the mind. I shall immediately make the vow to practice Bodhichitta and I shall follow the progressive steps of faith, comprehension, vow, meditation, and realization. When the time comes for the fruition of enlightenment, I shall surely return here. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 1995. #17.Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIA5: THE ONENESS OF THE MIND AND BUDDHA Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo The Bhutatathata essence is intangible, yet The display of its true nature is like the wish-fulfilling gem. The state of emptiness, calmness, and tranquility is beyond abiding and non-abiding. The aspect of clarity and purity is beyond sin and fortune. If one experiences, face to face, the Bhutatathata essence, then There is no differentiation between realization and non-realization. When it is beyond birth and death, there will be blissful tranquility, and The mind and Buddha are inseparable, indivisible. Realize the Three Kinds of Mind and remove the differentiation of the Four Types of Appearances. Eradicate ignorance to free oneself from clinging and grasping. Why bother to cleanse the "Bodhi tree", which is not a real tree after all! The Pureland is right here in this very present moment! All phenomena and appearances are illusory. There are aspects of good and evil. It is hard to achieve all aspects of truth, virtue, and purity (beauty) in this world. They can only be pursued through the liberation of the mind. It may look like a piece of painting, and It may sound like a piece of music. The illusory, non-concrete nature of the body is the same as emptiness, the True Reality. Don't try to hold on to it, but instead simply respond to whatever the circumstances and conditions are. Whatever one sees and whatever one talks about, and if No conflicting, inflicting emotions arise from the six sense faculties, The clarity, purity, radiance, and luminosity of the mind will naturally appear. Then, What should we come to Samsara for? * Lyric Poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 1995. #18: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIA6: WANTING TO GO HOME Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Forget where home is after wandering forever in the endless cycle of rebirth. Feel sad day and night. Where is this dharma sound coming from? Its every note deeply moves my heart. Look forward to getting on the road back to home. Search around day and night. Walk all over mountain tops and ocean bottoms. Finally I choose the road and path of the Buddha Dharma. The determination to pursue the realization of the Bhutatathata essence is so unshakable that I won't be held back by worldly activities, loving affairs, and concerns. The desire to go home is so strong that I won't be held back by fame and praise. Now, I get the chance to know the Bodhi, the true nature of my mind. It is in my heart all the time. How many times am I reborn as a sentient being? I was lost and aimlessly wandered around in the Samsara! Now, I get the chance to know the ignorance. It is also with me all the time. Now, I am on my way home. Never will I become deluded, lost, and ignorant! * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 1995. #19: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIA7: TRUE SELF OF BHUTATATHATA ESSENCE Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo It is the time of spring wind again. How many young people has it changed into old age? How many awakened, enlightened ones are concerned about how to liberate the sentient beings from sufferings? It is the time of spring rain again. How many Bodhi trees have grown greener from it? How many ambitious people have died since then? It is the time of spring wind again. In that spring wind the cycle of birth and death moves on as usual. How many practitioners are concerned about how to attain full enlightenment? It is the time of spring rain again. In that spring rain diligent practice has been carried on without a break. How many awakened, enlightened ones are concerned about how to liberate the sentient beings from sufferings? How many people have been trapped in the unending cycles of rebirth? How many people have attained the fruit of Buddhahood through diligent practice? Why are they being trapped? Why do they want to attain the fruit of Buddhahood? It is because of the existence of Samsara and the unceasing cycles of rebirth. The unending cycles of rebirth won't be able to carry away the Bhutatathata essence. It is the time of spring wind again. How many young people have been turned into old age by it? How many awakened, enlightened ones are concerned about how to liberate the sentient beings from sufferings? It is the time of spring rain again. How many Bodhi trees have grown greener from it? How many ambitious people have died since then? It is the time of spring wind again. In that spring wind the cycle of birth and death moves on as usual. How many practitioners are concerned about how to attain full enlightenment? It is the time of spring rain again. In that spring rain diligent practice has been carried on without a break. How many awakened, enlightened ones are concerned about how to liberate the sentient beings from sufferings? The unending flows of worldly concerns of the Samsara will end, just as the flow will end. The unceasing cycles of rebirth will cease, just as the worry will cease. Although it carries away the lives of heroes, the young and old, It will never carry away the Bhutatathata essence, the True Self. Although it carries away karma and cycles of birth and death, It will never carry away the Bhutatathata essence, the True Self. The Bhutatathata essence, the True Self! #20: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIA8: THE ZEN JOY OF NAN-SHAN Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo It is the blooming season of plum trees. Again, I come to the Nan-Shan Temple, my favorite place. I determine to lay down everything, and I come to attend the Seven-Day Zen Retreat (Chan-Chi). The teaching of Mahayana Order is supreme and precious, ensuring realization provided that we diligently practice. But, How many people out there really know about this teaching? The blessings bestowed upon us from Buddhas and the discourses given from the Masters Allow us to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. In the beginning there is the aching, I am so tired that I can hardly open my eyes. My mind is full of countless discursive thoughts and my body is sore all over. Incense sticks burn one after the other. I patiently practice even with such stresses. It is really terrifying and scary when I face my karmic dispositions. The demons of self-deception pour in from all directions. Ben Shi bestows blessings upon us and Dharma Protectors provide the needed protection, so that We are able to have peace of mind and a relaxed body for practice. Fervently practice meditation and sincerely confess all negative karma. Let go of all sense faculties, sense objects, and consciousness. Experience the emptiness of body, mind, all phenomena and appearances. Become naturally aware of the state of clarity and purity. All karma, obscurations, and hindrances are eradicated and the primordial wisdom is suddenly revealed, opened up. This is a truly wonderful retreat. From the bottom of my heart and with inexpressible joy I sincerely appreciate everything. I shall return for the next retreat! * Lyric Poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, January 5, 1996. #21: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIB1: PRAYER Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Let the hope of bells be heard! Let as many prayers as possible be said. Let the word defeat be deleted from our vocabulary! Let success be forever and ever in existence. Let sufferings be forgotten! Let the Bodhi seed be planted in the heart. Let the true nature of birthlessness [undying] be realized. Let desire, anger, and ignorance disappear. Let sorrow be replaced by Dharma joy and bliss! Let the carefree take the place of the shy. Let loving compassion fill the whole world. Let all sentient beings come and practice the precious Dharma. Let me comprehend the true meaning of the cycle of rebirth! Let me quit pursuing fame and praise. Let me realize the Principle of Dependent Origination. Let me actualize the empty nature of the Bhutatathata essence. Let the teaching of non-duality take hold! Let it be absolutely certain that it is beyond essence, birth, and seed. Let it be known that there are no more sentient beings in this Land. Let this Land be full of lotus flowers. Let the word defeat be deleted from our vocabulary! Let success be forever and ever in existence. Let it be known that there are no more sentient beings in this Land. Let this Land be full of lotus flowers. * Lyric Poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, January 5, 1996. #22: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIB2: REALIZATION Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Outside of the green veil we try hard to make a living. Inside the green veil we live by the strong bond of kinship. Now, I have lived through all kinds of hardships. I have finally awakened from the unending dreams. I could recall the passions and worldly affairs of my life, and I still indulge in the illusory dreams of fame and profit. I now deeply believe that The Bhutatathata essence is intrinsically self-luminous and self-radiant. Quickly recognize the Dharma seals of the Buddhayana Order. Fervently and diligently practice to destroy the root, fundamental ignorance. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, January 5, 1996. #23: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIB3: MAHAYANA BODHISATTVAS Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo The goal of Dharma practice is to Attain enlightenment and liberate sentient beings from sufferings. I won't be deterred by gusty winds and stormy rains. Sail the Dharma Ship and surge with the wind through giant waves. The banners of the Buddhayana Order have been raised high. Desire no more fame and profit. Cling no more to worldly kinships and companions. The home of Bhutatathata is what I search and look for. I want to be like Bodhisattvas who Always strive for attaining self-enlightenment and awakening other beings. Look inward to clearly see the true nature of the mind. Hear inward to vividly face the innate true self. The teaching of the Buddhayana Order is supreme, noble, and precious. The six sense faculties rest in their natural states. The nature of the six sense objects is primordially, innately empty. The six classes of consciousness are inherently illusory and faulty. Arise freely in the essence of awareness, yet free from ignorance. The Dharma essence is empty, calm, and still. The Bhutatathata essence has never been obstructed and fabricated. I want to be like Buddha too and have great loving compassion and liberate all sentient beings. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat, held in the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, January 6, 1996. #24: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIB4: ACTUALIZING THE BHUTATATHATA ESSENCE Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo How can it be so confused? The Bhutatathata essence is yet to be actualized! Recall the Buddhafield of Vairochanna. I cannot forget it even for an instant. Remember the Bhutatathata and Dharma essence! Remember the unchanging Dharma essence! Remember that compassion and equality! Remember that renunciation and joy! Remember that humanity and gratitude! Remember that birthlessness and fearlessness! Remember that fervent diligence! Remember that perfect primordial wisdom! I recall the essence, appearance, primordial wisdom, and virtue. I recall the principle, phenomena, energy, and application. I also recall the unification of time and space and the Unity of the Ten Greatnesses. How can I forget all these? Realize the Principle of Dependent Origination and Actualize the Bhutatathata essence. My Buddha nature is able to sustain, carry such burdens. Never forget the Buddhafield of Vairochanna! When will I attain full enlightenment and come face to face with my true nature? Completely cut off the root, fundamental ignorance and Let go and rest the sense faculties, sense objects, and consciousness in naturalness. May my Bhutatathata essence fully illuminate and radiate over Ten Directions. #25: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIB5: BUDDHA AND I Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo O, Buddha! Buddha is the great, the awakened, the enlightened being. Buddha represents love, compassion, and total liberation. When the radiance of Buddha pervades the universe, You will see the brilliant, luminous Dharma Ship. O, I! I am the lost, the deluded Buddha. I represent the illusory, deluded being. When the ignorance arises and covers all of me, You will see the unending cycle of rebirth, the consequences of causes and effects. This is the degenerate time. In this time the identity of I is stronger than that of Buddha. Why give us the Buddha? And, then Why bother to give an I? Clearly recognize that Buddha nature, the Buddha! Therefore, Never again attach, cling, and grasp so tightly and strongly on the I! Manifest the radiance and glory of the true nature of self. Swiftly liberate from that ignorance. #26: Zen-Song 10.15.97 SONG IIB6: THE TEN IMMEASURABLES Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Yin Engage in the emancipation of sentient beings with great love and compassion. Liberate suffering and bring joy to sentient beings by actual practice of the Way of the Bodhisattvas. All sentient beings have the identical Buddha nature. The true nature of the mind pervades the Three Times and the Ten Directions. Renounce the Three Realms and destroy the Three Poisons. Attain the spontaneous liberation and full enlightenment. Actualize the blissful state of mind by achieving great liberation. Liberate suffering and bring joy to all sentient beings wholeheartedly and joyfully when circumstances permit. True inseparability of our mind and the Dharmadhatu makes sentient beings live together harmoniously. Full realization of the true nature of all phenomena makes us great teachers of the Human and God Realms. Always sincerely feel grateful to Buddhas, teachers, parents, and sentient beings. Always remember our Lineage Masters as one remembers the head of all rivers when one drinks water. Attain the fruit of Buddhahood by realizing the true nature of birthlessness. Undertake the profound path of enlightenment by destroying the demons of self-deception. Attain true liberation without any graspings and attachments. Possess perfect qualities and divine virtues and be a Fearless One. Diligently practice the Dharma as all phenomena and appearances are mere reflections of the mind. Constantly turn the Wheel of the Dharma and engage in practicing the Way of Buddhas. Obtain omniscient wisdom by a complete realization of the Unity of the Ten Greatnesses. Constantly abide by the Realm of eternity, bliss, true self, and purity, and fulfill the pervasiveness of Dharmakaya. #27.Songs-2.98 10.15.97 SONG #27: EDUCATING THE FUTURE GENERATION Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Dedicated to teaching future generations for decades, There are obvious changes in appearances and physical conditions. Looking back and looking around, I see that the Once young kids are now gentlemen. Forty years, the age for one to become wise, has gone by. Then, in a little while Sixty years, the age for one to be relieved from responsibility, is around the corner. It is sad to see that one is getting old, with gray hairs, but Nothing can be done to hold it back. Not once do I investigate the meaning of life and death? I am often out of words while trying to ask the Gods Where does birth come from and where does death lead to? There is not the slightest clue that can be found. Luckily, I now find the Buddhayana teachings, Actualize the Bhutatathata essence, the Dharmakaya, and Realize the Principle of Dependent Origination during the Seven-Day Zen Retreat. I therefore take the Bodhichitta vow. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo for the 1996 National Teacher's Retreat Camp on August 24, 1996. #28.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #28: CHERISHING TONIGHT Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Buddha light shines forth and completely covers the Nan-Shan. The joy and happiness is beyond words. The discourses of Dharma fill up the whole Nan-Shan and They also open my heart. The Zengong teachings include Philosophy of Buddhism, sitting meditation and dynamic exercises. It is a systematic and progressive teaching that will allow us to attain the fruit of Buddhahood. My heart and Buddha are interconnected and radiantly shine upon each other so that I am able to experience the emptiness of the body and mind in meditation. There is only one night left. Tomorrow we shall say goodbye. Tonight is thus precious and priceless. See, how treasurable is tonight! I really do not want to say goodbye. There is so much memory and joy of our retreat to talk about. I really do not want to say goodbye. May we, at least, meet again in the dream. May we, at least, meet again in the dream. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo for the 1996 National Teacher's Retreat Camp on August 24, 1996. #29.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #29: PRAISE TO THE MAHAYANA ZENGONG Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Da Zi Zai Wang Fo! He manifests in this world, the Samsara. Patriarch Miao-Kung founded the Buddhayana Order. The Lineage of which was thus transmitted in China. It is the teachings of Buddha (Shakyamuni) that are being Widely propagated and transmitted here. Grand Master Shan-Yin and Grand Mater Shan-Fo follow the Patriarchs' footsteps and They continue propagating and transmitting Mahayana Zengong. The great Mahayana Zengong! The great Mahayana Zengong! The progressive teachings of Mahayana Zengong allow sentient beings to attain the fruit of Buddhahood in this lifetime, As long as they eradicate their root, fundamental ignorance. The great Mahayana Zengong! The great Mahayana Zengong! Mahayana Zengong will exist for aeons. The radiance of Mahayana Zengong will shine all over the universe. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo for the 1996 National Teacher's Retreat Camp on August 24, 1996. #30.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #30: IT'S NOT LONELY OUT THERE Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo As sentient beings, we must truly know that our Bhutatathata essence is primordially fulfilled. Because of the arisen ignorance we have subsequently entered into this world. We have suffered the unceasing cycle of birth and death. How many of us are aware of our Original Faces. As Buddhas' children, we must fully realize that the existences of ourselves and all phenomena depend on conditions and circumstances. The causes and effects, the appearing and disappearing are all illusory and unreal. We had better stop pursuing illusions. Instead, We should learn loving kindness, compassion, joy, and impartiality to all beings. As practitioners, we ought to take the Bodhichitta vow to attain the Buddhahood on the one hand and to help sentient beings on the other. We must perfectly actualize the ultimate realization ourselves and then help others to achieve the same goal. We then attain the supreme enlightenment and We shall bring liberation and emancipation to sentient beings all over the world. As disciples, we should be appreciative and understand the dedication and efforts our Masters have put into transmitting and propagating the Dharma. We should really appreciate that and We vow to repay the Grand Masters. That will be a testimony that it is not lonely out there. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo for the 1996 National Teacher's Retreat Camp on August 24, 1996. #31.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #31: PRAISE TO BUDDHAS Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Buddha lights shine over Nan-Shan. The Dharma nectars fill up my whole heart. We have immeasurable treasures at our disposal, but Why are we still trapped in the unending cycles of birth and death? We sincerely want to be like the Buddhas whose Bodhi nature brilliantly shines in all directions. We fervently want to be like the Buddhas liberating all sentient beings and Leading them to live in the Pureland of Calm and Illumination. My fellow practitioners, Hurry up and enjoy the Buddhist practice. Let the Self-nature shine forth and Let its radiance be even brighter than the Sun. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 1997. #32.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #32: MEDITATION PRACTICE Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo (1) Meditation practice, everyone needs to seriously practice meditation. We can not just deludedly walk through the journey of our life. We should treasure our Buddha nature and We should not waste our precious youthful life. Let us fervently vow to generate our Bodhichitta, Let go of all things and phenomena which are impermanent. Let us now and forever diligently practice Dharma and Let us now and forever persistently pursue the ultimate truth, good deeds, and beauty (purity). (2) Buddhayana, everyone needs Buddhayana. We can not deludedly waste the journey of our life. We should treasure the precious supreme Buddhayana. It is hard to regain the precious youthful life. Let us fervently vow to diligently live the path of Buddhayana, Let the glory of Buddhayana shine forth far and wide. Let brilliant lights of the Buddhayana forever and ever illuminate the Three Realms. (3) Meditation practice, everyone needs to seriously practice meditation. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the New Year holiday of 1997. #33.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #33: NON-APPEARANCE AND NON-EXISTENCE Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo (1) The body is born out of non-appearance (the True Reality). It is the illusion that generates the various kinds of appearances and images. The nature of the mind (consciousness) is emptiness. The natures of crime and good fortune are also emptiness because They are neither abiding nor non-abiding in the ultimate level of truth. The nature of good deeds is illusory, so is the nature of evil deeds. Often the Four Elements are falsely recognized as the real body. The true nature of mind is intrinsic non-production or non-elimination. The myriad phenomena and all things are only the products of our consciousness. The objects exist because they reflect/display the state of our mind. When our consciousness ceases functioning the external world accordingly ceases to exist. (2) Seeing the body has no reality is called seeing the Buddha body (Dharmakaya). If one realizes that the consciousness is no more than mirage and delusion; If one actualizes that the body and consciousness are empty in nature; Then, is there any difference between such a person and Buddha? Because When the consciousness ceases functioning the objects and the cognizing/knowing processes accordingly cease to exist. Wise men realize that the nature of sin is emptiness. They are free from fear of life and death. The Buddha nature of all sentient beings is pure and stainless. There is nothing that could cause it to decrease or increase. The body and mind are thus illusory and have no true reality. Crime and good fortune, by the same token, are illusory and have no true reality. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the New Year holiday of 1997. #34.Songs-2.98 11.15.97 SONG #34: THE MARVELOUS WAKEFUL MIND Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo The Bhutatathata and Dharmata is the true nature of our marvelous mind, which is wakeful and omniscient. The mind is the Truth of the Dharmadhatu. It exists since beginningless time. The essence of prajna (marvelous wisdom) does not possess any specific appearances. The mind merely cognizes whatever appears. It returns to its natural state when circumstances disappear. The true nature of mind has nothing like production or elimination. So, It is pure, clear, luminous, and radiant. If we surpass the intellectual level of understanding things and If we are uncontrived in dealing with whatever is presented to us, then We can be called a truly liberated practitioner. The essence of the mind is innately birthlessness. Objects exist because they reflect/display the state of our mind. The ignorance is illusory and may appear to be the existence of something, but Its nature is empty. The existence of our body is no more than a temporary illusion. The function of our mind is like whirling winds. Wise men are able to surpass worldly activities and passions. They achieve the state of non-duality, non-differentiation. Their "Empty Body" is the Dharmakaya. Hence, They truly generate the Bodhichitta vow that They will attain full realization and help others to achieve the same goal. #35.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #35: THE DHARMA JOY OF CHAN-CHI Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Yin We have greatly benefitted from the Seven-day Zen Retreat. Our hearts are fully filled with Dharma joy. Buddha is compassionate and is always concerned about the karma of sentient beings. We have received supreme teachings and We have also diligently practiced Buddha Dharmas. We will attain liberation and emancipation from the Samsara, life after life. #36.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #36: THE DA ZI ZAI ANGELS Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Disciples of Mahayana Zengong are like the Sun during dawn. They radiate the brilliant light of Buddha nature. They break through their delusion and confusion. They courageously, continuously propagate and spread the Buddha teachings. They joyously help liberating sentient beings. They give hope of emancipation and elimination of ignorance to sentient beings in the Jambudvipa. This permits them to take the Bodhichitta vows. Thus, That helps the sentient beings to see and follow the path leading to the Sun. Then, The sentient beings will never lose their direction, therefore They can firmly and steadily march forward on the path of ultimate liberation. Angels of Da Zi Zai are abundant. They fully comprehend the truth of myriad phenomena and appearances which do not have their own inherent existence. Their Self-nature radiates blazing light. They do not grasp and cling to the Three Minds and Four Appearances, so they can freely fly under the blue sky. They diligently practice the Buddhayana teachings in order to fully understand the Buddha Dharma and completely liberate the sentient beings in all directions. Their powers reach the Six Lower Realms of Existence. They are able to relieve the emotional sufferings of sentient beings. Thus, The ocean of suffering can be transformed into a Lotus Pureland. They not only attain realization themselves, but also help other to reach the same goal, and They will always abide in the Pureland of Calm and Illumination. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 1997. #37.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #37: THE TORCH BEARERS OF BUDDHAS by Grand Master Shan-Fo (1) There is a Dharmakaya Buddha in the far away Buddhafield. The Buddha's name is Vairochanna. There is a Buddha in the Samsara. Its name is the Self-nature Buddha. Although it is hard to see the pure Dharmakaya Buddha, We could easily visit the Pureland of Ultimate Bliss in meditation. Although it is hard to see the true nature of birthlessness, We could easily experience the pure, radiant sphere in meditation. (2) There is a Dharmakaya Buddha in the Perfect Dharmadhatu. Its name is Da Zai Wang Fo. There is a Buddha in the Jambudvipa. He manifested as the saintly monk Miao-Kong. Monk Miao-Kong is the founder of the Buddhayana Order. He unified the Buddhist teachings from the eight major Buddhist schools. Monk Miao-Kong handed down the supreme Mahayana Zengong teaching. A teaching that unifies the body and mind and also integrates the essence and application. (3) In the immeasurable kalpas ago it was in a split second that Conceptual ignorant thoughts arose from the Bhutatathata essence. Thereby The Three Realms, the Sun, and the Moon were created. Differentiation among you, he, and I started because we held the illusory body, which consists of the Six Elements, as the solidified self. So, We became trapped in the endless cycles of birth and death in the Samsara. We have lost count of how many years passed by. Let the Self-nature be swiftly purified, and Let the Self-nature remain in the state of purity and radiance forever. Let the Self-nature be swiftly purified, and Let the Self-nature remain in the state of purity and radiance forever. Let the Self-nature be swiftly purified, and Let the Self-nature remain in the state of purity and radiance forever. #38.Songs-2.98 2.15.98 SONG #38: ZEN IN THE SPRING TIME OF NAN-SHAN by Grand Master Shan-Fo (1) It is a new Spring time again. Buddhist disciples come back to the truly beautiful Nan-Shan Temple. Grand Masters give Dharma teachings and disciples devotedly practice Zen meditation. The ultimate goal is to attain liberation, be free from the cycle of birth and death. First calm down the mind and then sincerely confess our karmas accumulated since the beginningless time. We then let the true nature of the mind pervade the Dharmadhatu. My mind and the mind of Buddha unify as one inseparable entity. The Dharma joy of such a meditation experience is beyond description. The Unity of the Ten Greatnesses begins with Virtue. Realizing the Greatness of Virtue will allow us to liberate all sentient beings from sufferings. Subduing the six Sense Faculties effectively stops the ignorance from arising. Our unconditioned loving kindness and compassion, as a result, will then be fully developed. (2) It is Spring again. Buddhist disciples come back to the truly majestic Nan-Shan Temple. Grand Masters give blessings and disciples devotedly practice Zen meditation. The ultimate goal is to regain the true nature of the mind. There are practices of dynamic meditation and sitting meditation. There should be no differentiation between the two forms of meditation. The brilliant golden light permeates the Dharmadhatu. The radiant light shines forth through me and the Buddhas. By looking inward and hearing inward we meet the True Self-nature. And We will realize that the True Self never dies and is never born. I am the mountain and I am the water. The true nature of the mind is pervading the Dharmadhatu. #39.Songs-2.98 4.15.98 SONG #39: THE UNCONDITIONED COMPASSIONATE FERRY Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo The beauty and peace of the Avatamsaka Pureland is beyond words. All things exhibit colorful radiant rainbows and fragrances. For the sake of loving kindness and compassion we took rebirth into this world to Assist Wang Fo in providing the unconditioned compassionate ferryboats to save all sentient beings. We do not pursue fame, power, and wealth. But We beseech to have wisdom and good health. The unsurpassed, profound teachings of Buddhayana is difficult to encounter. It is beyond our intelligent language and expression to explain the Ten Greatnesses. Hurry! Hurry! Hurry up to save the sentient beings. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Summer Zen Retreat Camp for teachers and college students held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, on August 1, 1997. #40.Songs-2.98 4.15.98 SONG #40: BE SUCCESSFUL IN BECOMING A BUDDHA Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo (1) Spring has just gone by and Fall is coming. Time flies by quickly. Past events that have happened are like smokes and dreams. The small bridge and creek are still there. But Where is everyone? The wind is quite chilly in Fall. Grasses and bushes become sparse. Where does the transitory life go? The unending cycles of rebirth keep on turning, and The scenery is constantly changing. And My good friends are nowhere to be found. Rivers have mutely been flowing eastward day and night. Let go of all things as The nature of all things is emptiness. How many passions and sorrows have been buried in our hearts? May there be happiness and joy forever. But, With whom shall we share? (2) The supreme teachings of Buddhayana is unsurpassable. If meditation practice is truly applied, sure realization is attainable. The teachings have embodied those of the eight major schools of Buddhism. It unifies the mind and body. It integrates the aspects of both essence and applications of Buddhist doctrine. It allows us to fully perfect the performance of worldly and spiritual activities. It is precious to be born as a human being. It is hard to encounter a realized master. In the Samsara it is difficult to find a profound teaching. To be able to enter the Buddhist path indeed results from immeasurable virtue and fortune. May we thoroughly realize that the existence of all things depends on conditions and circumstances, and that All things have no inherent, independent nature. There is nothing but diligent and brave doing meditation practices. May we devote ourselves fully to the practices of humanity, gratitude, realization of birthlessness, compassion, and equality. May we actualize the perfection of the Ten Greatnesses. May we be successful in becoming a Buddha. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Summer Zen Retreat Camp for teachers and college students held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, on August 1, 1997. #41.Songs-3.98 3.15.98 SONG #41: THE ULTIMATE ACHIEVEMENTS OF MEDITATION PRACTICE Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Yin Our high spirit of meditation practice is like a diamond. We practice our unconditioned loving kindness and compassion just like Bodhisattvas do. We practice the perfection of patience and generosity and put those in action in all directions. The Way of Bodhisattvas radiantly reaches the Six Realms of Existence. I have strong faith. I want to diligently practice meditation and be a devoted practitioner. I will always remember the Bodhisattva vow. It is an act that draws praise from beings in both the Human and God's Realms. I pray to Ben Shi to grant me ability and power, so I can constantly turn the Wheel of Dharma. I pray to Ben Shi to bless me with ever increasing wisdom, so I can steadily grow on the path toward enlightenment and I can attain immeasurable bodies of Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya. These are the ultimate achievements of meditation practice. Let us all stand on the Earth and reach for the sky. Let us join together in meditation practice. Let us practice the Way of the Bodhisattva. Let the fragrance of our heart lighten up. Let us make offerings to beings in the Ten Directions. Let us become Dharma practitioners. Let us make the supreme Bodhisattva vow. It is an act that draws praise from beings in the Human and God's Realms. Let us become Dharma practitioners. Let us make the supreme Bodhisattva vow. It is an act that draws praise from beings in the Human and God's Realms. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Yin in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 1998. #42.Songs-3.98 4.15.98 SONG #42: THE LITTLE SONATA OF NAN-SHAN Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo The Nan-Shan Temple is like a Dharma ship constantly wavering in the ocean of suffering. My fellow disciples! You are floating around in the ocean of my heart. Let my Dharma nectars (wisdom) follow the breeze to open your heart. Let my teachings follow the river to continuously talk to you. The long shadow of the Nan-Shan Temple will never cover the boundless heart of loving compassion. The Moon light and the Buddha light all shine upon and lighten up my heart. The truth about the conditioned arising and ceasing is so clearly understood. My fellow disciples! How could you still not realize Bodhi? * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the New Year holiday of 1998. #43.Songs-3.98 3.15.98 SONG #43: ALL BEINGS ARE BUDDHAS Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Wandering in the Samsara is like living in a dream. ih ya hey ya hey! Illusory images displayed in the dream are unforgettably sweet. ih ya hey ya hey! But, who is in control of sorrow and joy, parting and joining together? The love, wealth, fame, and power all quickly evaporate into the thin air. Where are you once you wake up from the dream? There are mountains after mountains; There are uncountable waves in the oceans; and There are immense desert sands which were burial grounds for heroes. What was the reality of their beautiful dreams? It was as though their coming into this world was solely by chance, But why was their departure from the world in such a hurry! (2) ya hey ya hey ya hey! One who fully comprehends the true nature of sentient beings is a Buddha. ih ya hey ya hey! One who is free from defilements attains realization. ih ya hey ya hey! A Being is a Buddha when the Being realizes his/her true Self-nature . A Buddha is a Being when the Buddha loses wakeful Self-nature . Buddhas and sentient beings have identical essence. When one (self-nature) achieves the state of ultimate equality, The being is the Buddha. However, If one has strong grasping and clinging and holds dualistic views, The being will never encounter a Buddha in eons. The Dharma joy has never been so pure. Delusion and illusion have been broken up here in the Nan-Shan Temple. How can I forget? How can I forget the Pureland of Calm and Illumination? How can I forget the Thousand Ornaments Palace? How can I forget the Da Zi Zai Wang Fo? I can not forget the pristine origin of the Dharmadhatu, too! (2) How can I forget? How can I forget? How can I forget the Golden Hall covered by glistening sands of gold? How can I forget the lotuses in the Ponds of Lotus Flowers? How can I forget the retinues of Buddhas? I can not forget the rainbow-like Heaven of Clear Light, too! The lonely home is still filled with pure radiance. The loving compassionate Buddhas still express their timeless, glorious virtuesand merits. Buddhas repeatedly remind you to go back to your true "home". Time after time, however, you just forget about it. You simply forget about it. How about your mission, do you remember? Time after time, you just could not accomplish it. You just simply could not accomplish it. (3) How can I forget? How can I forget? How can I forget the Bodhichitta vow? How can I forget to regain my Buddha nature? How can I forget the sadness of my disarray? I can not forget the perfect Lotus Pureland, too! * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the New Year holiday of 1998. #49.Songs-3.98 2.15.98 SONG #49: THE BIRTHLESS NATURE OF THE MIND Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo (1) The body is like a guest. We have been indulging in samsaric activities. We should realize that all things are like dreams. Remember! Because of ignorance a conceptual thought would arise. Then, We became deluded and eventually were trapped in the samsaric jail. The Four Elements consist of earth, water, fire, and wind elements. The nature of the Four Elements is emptiness. Waking up from deluded dreams, there is nothing but sorrow. Sentient beings are continuously reincarnated in the six lower realms of existence. We have been going through the unending cycles of birth and death. And, We have already been in these kinds of situations countless times. (2) The mind is the host. All things and phenomena are manifested from the mind. We should understand that various karmic seeds are generated from the conscious mind. Remember! The essence of the mind is birthlessness. The nature of the conscious mind is primordially empty. We should comprehend that the function of mind is like a mirage. If the mind is in a state of neither abiding nor non-abiding, then The fruit of Bodhi will automatically become ripe. However, If we let our conceptual thoughts randomly arise and disappear, then We will be reborn in the cycles of existence. It is like trees that grow well after receiving indiscriminate rainfall. (3) The mind is the Buddha. A real Buddha exists only in the mind. It is a state of purity and tranquility like the vast sky. Realize! If there are no arising thoughts, then We are in a state of unwavering. If The six Sense Faculties are in a state of non-responsiveness, and if The six classes of Consciousness are in a state of emptiness, then The Bhutatathata, the Dharmata will automatically manifest. When the production and elimination of thoughts cease then Nirvana will spontaneously be present and We will attain the eternal Da Zi Zai. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the New Year holiday of 1998. #50.Songs-3.98 2.15.98 SONG #50: THE WONDERFUL BUDDHAYANA Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo (1) It is wonderful to practice meditation! It is wonderful to practice meditation! Meditation practice allows us to take up the bright and radiant path. There are many heros, braves, and paladins who have sincerely received the Buddha's teachings. We learn and practice the Buddha Dharmas. We listen to the Patriarchs' advice and guidance. Our zealous desire for Dharma practice is higher than Mount Sumeru. Indeed, it is higher than Mount Sumeru. (2) It is wonderful to practice meditation! It is wonderful to practice meditation! The Buddhayana teaching allows us to firmly march on to the path of Buddhahood. There are many Buddhists, Bodhisattvas, and Arhats who have sincerely engaged in the Buddhayana's teachings. We practice the ultimate Buddha Dharmas. We receive blessing from the ever pervading Buddha light. The radiance of Buddhayana is brighter than that of the Sun. Indeed, it is brighter than the Sun. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the New Year holiday of 1998. #51.Songs-3.98 2.15.98 SONG #51: ANY GOOD NEWS ABOUT SEEING THE BHUTATATHATA Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo People are busy, like flies, wandering endlessly in Samsara, They fervently pursue fame and profit so they constantly compete with others. Hey! My friend! I want to ask you: "Is there any good news about seeing your Bhutatathata?" Winds blow away maple leaves in disarray during fall times, Impermanence is the name of life-and-death, so who has found themselves? Hey! Bhutatathata! I want to ask you: "Where are you since the beginningless time?" It is clear that it is not possible to hold on to illusive images, yet emotionally We have a hard time accepting that. Oh! My Bhutatathata! I have been seeking to reach you. I have been looking for you with all my effort and time. I have been up to the mountain tops and down in the ocean bottoms to search for you. Only to find it is hidden in the bottom of my heart! Oh, Bhutatathata I am longing for you! How I wish to attain the state of unity between man and Buddha! * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the New Year holiday of 1998. #52.Songs-3.98 4.15.98 SONG #52: LOVING KINDNESS Lyric Poem by Grand Master Shan-Fo Music by Master Fa-Chung Everyone has a big heart embodying the pure and radiant loving kindness. It is like the tinkling stars. It burns itself to illuminate others. Everyone has a big heart embodying the pure and radiant loving kindness. It is like the tinkling stars. It burns itself to illuminate others. It knows that wealth and fortune is like the drifting clouds; The real worthy thing is loving kindness; and The sole meaningful goal is to promote peace, happiness, and harmony in the world. * Lyric poem written by Grand Master Shan-Fo in the Seven-Day Zen Retreat held at the Nan-Shan Temple, Kaohsiung, during the Lunar New Year holiday of 1998. |
